<div>Within a large movement to build business and financials districts of mid-rise office buildings, the brief for this invited competition was to create an ‘iconic’ office headquarters for Emec Petroleum services in the new administrative district in New Cairo. The first proposal was based on a careful analysis of the context, where every building aspires to be a landmark in itself, and reacted mostly to the site by opening up the view at the corner, providing public space on the ground floor, as well as creating a unique appearance contrasting with its context. In the second proposal we decided to challenge thee notion of visual icon, and create an anti-icon. A pure cubic form perforated by a number of green atriums and outdoor terraces that provide several public(s) at different floors, as well as acting as light pores. Then the cube was veiled by a skin made of translucent panels as well as PV screens.</div>
